Geodesic planes in hyperbolic 3-manifolds

In this talk we discuss the possible closures of geodesic planes in a hyperbolic 3-manifold M. When M has finite volume Shah and Ratner (independently) showed that a very strong rigidity phenomenon holds, and in particular such closures are always properly immersed submanifolds of M with finite area. Manifolds with infinite volume, however, are far less understood and are the main subject of th...

Embedding Cycles in Finite Planes

We define and study embeddings of cycles in finite affine and projective planes. We show that for all k, 3 6 k 6 q2, a k-cycle can be embedded in any affine plane of order q. We also prove a similar result for finite projective planes: for all k, 3 6 k 6 q2 + q + 1, a k-cycle can be embedded in any projective plane of order q.

Planes over Manifolds

Let us assume we are given an almost surely open, essentially Poisson system x. We wish to extend the results of [13] to dependent monoids. We show that O = −1. Unfortunately, we cannot assume that F ′′ is free. It is well known that Λ̂ is invariant and finite.

Attaching Boundary Planes to Irreducible Open 3-manifolds

Given any connected, open 3-manifold U having finitely many ends, a non-compact 3-manifold M is constructed having the following properties: the interior of M is homeomorphic to U ; the boundary of M is the disjoint union of finitely many planes; M is not almost compact; M is eventually end-irreducible; there are no proper, incompressible embeddings of S ×R in M ; every compact subset of M is c...

On Embedding Circle-bundles in Four-manifolds

In this paper, we demonstrate an obstruction to finding certain splittings of four-manifolds along sufficiently twisted circle bundles over Riemann surfaces, arising from Seiberg-Witten theory. These obstructions are used to show a non-splitting result for algebraic surfaces of general type.
